Ukraine has asked Turkey to close Black Sea waterways to Russia, says ambassador
Ukraine has asked Turkey to close the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits to Russian ships and wants sanctions imposed on Moscow, Ukraine’s ambassador to Ankara said Thursday, after Russia launched air and ground assaults on its neighbour.
NATO member Turkey Ukraine, which shares a maritime Black Sea border with Ukraine and Russia, opposes sanctions but has called Russian steps against Ukraine unacceptable. Under a 1936 pact, Ankara has control over the straits and can limit warship passages if it is threatened or during wartime.
What is NATO doing?
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg has convened a meeting of NATO ambassadors to assess the invasion of Ukraine, which borders several NATO members.
The meeting Thursday morning will address the situation in Ukraine and the consequences of Russia’s unprovoked attack. Earlier, Stoltenberg had already condemned Russia’s invasion. “Despite our repeated warnings and tireless efforts to engage in diplomacy, Russia has chosen the path of aggression,” Stoltenberg said.

Ukraine’s Kyiv, Kharkiv hit by missile strikes
Ukrainian military command centres in the cities of Kyiv and kharkiv have been attacked by missile strikes, the Ukrainska Pravda news website cited a Ukrainian interior ministry official as saying on Thursday. Reuters witnesses in Kyiv heard a series of explosions shortly after Russia announced a military operation in Ukraine.
